Spill the Tox: Nonstick Cookware

That easy, no-stick surface? It comes with a trade-off most people don’t realize.

Many nonstick pans are coated with chemicals known as PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) — often called “forever chemicals” because they don’t break down easily in the environment or the body.

When these pans are heated (especially at high temps), the coating can break down and release fumes.

PFAS have been associated with concerns such as:

• Hormone disruption

• Immune system effects

• Liver impacts

• Developmental concerns

• Increased cancer risk

If your cookware is labeled nonstick, there’s a good chance it contains PFAS.

And here’s the kicker

Even small scratches on the surface can increase the chance of exposure.

Simple swaps:

Instead of traditional nonstick, try:

• Stainless steel

• Cast iron

• Ceramic-coated cookware (look for PFAS-free labels)

Pro tip: With ceramic-coated options, check the core material — some are made with aluminum underneath.

Your Spill the Tox challenge:

Take a look at your pans.

If they’re scratched, flaking or super old…it might be time for an upgrade.

Because what you cook your food on matters just as much as what you cook....
